3D Work

Right it has been a while again since i did an update so the next few posts of what i have done as i approach the end of the project. I wanted to make this post to reflect on what i have learnt so far.
So throughout this project i have learnt to design and develop a level, but it is not always that easy and there are so many different ways to achieve different effects.

This project has allowed me to develop my own design style and texture style. I have learnt alot of aspects of Maya that i never knew existed. Here are a number of aspects that i have learnt and need to practice to create better assets.

  • Diffuse Maps
  • Texture Pages
  • UV mapping (cylindrical, planar, automatic)
  • Creation of textures and other map pages (normal map, height map, specular, diffuse)
  • Applying textures to objects
  • Bump mapping (crazy bump)
  • Creation of interesting 3D shapes
  • Creating originality when designing textures
  • Texture attributes (glow effects, shininess, transparency.)
I also learnt a lot of ways to model and texture to make the design  process life easier

  • Breaking objects into separate pieces to make UV mapping and texturing more effective
  • Working with tri's and quad polygons
  • Switching between maya and Photoshop to improve existing assets
  • Creation of clean objects make  later stages after that easier.
Aspects i need to work on in the future

  • Cleaner meshes for objects
  • More experiences with Photoshop
  • Applying specific maps effectively/ creation of maps
Problems i have encountered
  • Working from a large file from start causes crashes problems (fix by creating objects in separate scenes
  • Duplicating parts of a scene to create a desired model (example: My blacksmith Fence/ breaking up beams and then multiplying them.
  • slight imperfections on meshes. (manor house windows encountered a problem with texturing  and importing into UDK.
  • Time Management  I found i created too much in early stages not appreciating how long texturing would take
